In the heart of Berlin-Friedrichshain, you can find an extraordinary place for picky eaters: a vegan Vietnamese restaurant called 1990 Vegan Living that offers Asian tapas.
I spotted the 1990 Vegan Living close to my work and then, finally, on one of these Berlin rainy days, I visited it – and it totally made my day. Getting inside, we were welcomed by the warm lights, the detailed decoration and a delicious smell of hot spices. We sat down on a small table for two.
On the menu, there are basically two categories: Vietnamese tapas and big bowls. Except for smoothies, some cocktails (with and without alcohol) and some fancy teas you can also find vegan wine on the menu.
It took us quite a long time to pick – everything on the menu sounded special and worth a try. Finally, we decided to go for six tapas to share and some tea. At 1990, you order your food by just ticking the dishes you want on a little card – quite a nice system for not losing the overview.
After a short time of waiting, our food came – I mean look at the picture, do I have to say anything more!? From the dumplings, the tofu covered in green rice flakes with a raspberry chilli dip to the tempura soy pearls covered in seaweed with a wasabi soy reduction – really, everything was just amazing. And the “All Times Favourite” was the best seaweed salad I ever had. The dishes were so creative and unusual, each one presented as a little surprise for you to taste.
PS: The other day, I came over for lunch at 1990. I went for the “Bowl of happiness” – and yes, it was keeping its promise. Again – very nice composition of salty, spicy and sweet tastes, as well as an interesting combination of different textures. So here I got one last picture for you and a serious plea – please go to 1990 as soon as you can!
