At Kastanientörtchen, a sweet café in Berlin-Prenzlauerberg, you can build your very own tartlet following your personal preferences. And the best thing is: the owners kept the Picky Eaters among us in mind!
On a sunny weekend, I visited Kastanientörtchen with a dear friend of mine. The concept of the café is as genius as it is simple: First, you have to decide on one of the three tartlet sizes (the small one with one layer of cake and cream, the medium one with two and the big one with three layers). We finally went for two medium ones and one small one. After that, you have to choose from the big variety of cakes, creams, nuts, fruit, sprinkles and sauces. In summer, there is also the option to replace the cream with ice cream – just wow.
But it gets even better. There are cake options that are fully vegan, some are vegan and gluten-free, others are lactose and gluten-free. Same for all the toppings – in fact, even when you are a very picky eater, you still have a big variety to pick from. I think that’s amazing!
My friend and I went for these crazy combinations: a coconut almond cake with mango sorbet and strawberries (lactose + gluten-free). Carrot cake and chocolate brownie with coconut cream and cherry raspberry cream, topped with pistachio sauce (vegan). Almond brittle cake and coconut almond cake with cherry raspberry and vanilla cream topped with strawberries.
While eating our (btw incredibly delicious) tartlets and drinking our home-made iced teas, Paul, who founded the café together with his wife Anne just 1.5 years ago, told us about the philosophy of Kastanientörtchen. It was very important for them to create a space where everybody can just enjoy the sweet sides of life.
We will definitely come back to Kastanientörtchen to try some more combinations!
